Akasha Urhobo and Nishesh Basavareddy Secure Wild Cards for French Open Main Draw After Triumphing in Roland Garros Wild Card Challenges - 10sBalls.com • TennisBalls.com

Two promising American tennis players, Akasha Urhobo and Nishesh Basavareddy, are set to make their marks at this year’s Roland Garros after triumphing in the USTA’s Wild Card Challenges. Their recent performances have secured them main draw wild cards for the French Open, taking place later this month.

Nineteen-year-old Urhobo clinched her spot by reaching the finals of the USTA Pro Circuit W100 event held in Bonita Springs, Florida, just days ago. So far in 2026, she has been impressive, amassing a 29-7 win-loss record and capturing three titles on the USTA Pro Circuit. Urhobo’s ranking has seen a significant leap from No. 332 at the beginning of January to a current position of No. 183. This upcoming Grand Slam will be her first main draw appearance after competing in the US Open qualifying rounds over the past two years. She trains under USTA National Coach Jermaine Jenkins.

On the other hand, 21-year-old Basavareddy, who celebrated his birthday on the same day he earned this wild card, will also be making his main draw debut at the French Open. Having previously participated in the qualifying rounds last year, he has gained valuable experience. Formerly ranked as high as No. 99 in the world, Basavareddy earned attention with a commendable performance at the Australian Open in January, where he made it to the second round. His recent victory at a Challenger event in Savannah, Georgia, two weeks prior, helped him secure the necessary points to outpace Emilio Nava in the standings.

The final point standings for the Wild Card Challenge are as follows:

Women’s Standings:

  1. Akasha Urhobo (183) – 161 points
  2. Mary Stoiana (149) – 87 points
  3. Kayla Day (148) – 81 points

Men’s Standings:

  1. Nishesh Basavareddy (154) – 112 points
  2. Emilio Nava (108) – 103 points
  3. Jack Kennedy (433) – 64 points

The Challenge assigned points based on players’ top three finishes in clay-court pro tournaments at the W35 level and above for women and M25 level and above for men over the preceding five weeks. If the top point earner had received direct placement into the French Open main draw, the wild card would have been awarded to the next eligible American player based on the standings.

Historically, several American players have benefited from this Challenge, with notable names such as Amanda Anisimova, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Emma Navarro previously advancing in the tournament.

Looking back, the wild card recipients over the last few years highlight a mix of emerging talent and established names in American tennis, with last year’s winners, Iva Jovic and Emilio Nava, each making it to the second round. As Urhobo and Basavareddy prepare for their Roland Garros journey, they join a proud lineage of American players aiming to make an impact on one of tennis’s most prestigious stages.
