Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Mihailovic, Dest, and more


AZ Alkmaar’s UEFA Conference League hopes might be hanging by a thread, but Djordje Mihailovic helped the Dutch club stay alive heading into Matchday 6 of the group stage.

Mihailovic started and played 81 minutes in AZ Alkmaar’s 1-0 home win over Zrinjski Mostar on Thursday night. The former Chicago Fire and CF Montreal midfielder earned his first start since August 24 across all competitions, logging a strong performance for the Eredivisie hosts. Mihailovic won nine of 14 duels, made two tackles, drew one foul, and created two offensive chances.

The home victory for AZ Alkmaar has them needing a victory over Legia Warsaw on Matchday 6 to advance into the Round of 32. Mihailovic will hope his positive performance will need to more starts in the near future.

In Champions League action, Sergino Dest assisted once while Ricardo Pepi scored once for PSV.

In England, Haji Wright scored the game-winning goal for Coventry City.
