In the NBA, players at different positions win the MVP award with regularity, but in the NFL, it is rare to see any non-quarterbacks take home MVP honors.
The last time it happened was in 2012 when Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson won the award and became one of just a handful of players to ever run for at least 2,000 yards in a single season.
This season, Christian McCaffrey is having a year to remember for the San Francisco 49ers, who improved to 8-3 after making quick work of the Seattle Seahawks on Thanksgiving Day.
One analyst said on the “NFL on Fox Podcast” that he could envision McCaffrey claiming this season’s MVP if he keeps playing the way he has.

Right now, the frontrunners for the award are the quarterbacks of arguably the NFL’s two best teams — Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts.
Mahomes won the award last season, while Hurts was the runner-up, but this season, Mahomes’ production has been a bit subpar, at least by his standards.
McCaffrey, on the other hand, has run for 939 yards and 11 touchdowns, and he is leading all running backs in both categories.
He has a unique set of skills and talents, as he is quick on his feet, yet he possesses power and is a physical runner, as he tends to hit people while running the football.
The 27-year-old is also a dual-threat tailback, and he has 48 receptions for 389 yards and five touchdowns this year — as a result, he leads everyone in total touchdowns and narrowly trails Tyreek Hill for the second-most yards from scrimmage.
He transformed the Niners’ offense right after he arrived in a midseason trade last year, and he is as big a reason as anyone else why they’re legitimate Super Bowl contenders right now.
