Aitana Bonmatí Out Due to Leg Injury Ahead of UEFA Nations League Final
Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí has suffered a leg injury that will keep her off the field as her team prepares for the UEFA Nations League final second leg against Germany, set for Tuesday in Madrid.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that the 27-year-old midfielder sustained a fibula fracture during a training session on the weekend. Bonmatí, a three-time Ballon d’Or winner, will return to her club, Barcelona, for further assessments to determine her recovery timeline.
According to an ESPN source, if her condition does not require surgery, she may be sidelined for around two months. Conversely, if surgical intervention is necessary, her return could take longer.
This injury news comes just two days before Spain’s crucial match at Atlético Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium, where they aim to defend their Nations League title. The first leg of the final in Germany ended in a goalless draw.
With Bonmatí out, coach Sonia Bermúdez must find alternatives in the midfield, especially since fellow Barcelona player Patri Guijarro is also unable to play due to injury. Youngsters Vicky López, Sydney Schertenleib, and Clara Serrajordi may see increased playing time during this period.
This season, Bonmatí has made 15 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions, contributing six goals and four assists. Barcelona remains in a strong position domestically and in the Champions League, leading Liga F by six points after 12 matches and holding the top spot in their Champions League group ahead of OL Lyon. They have five more matches scheduled before the year’s end, including two in the Champions League.
