Djokovic Told To Look To John McEnroe After Surprising Ivanisevic Split

Novak Djokovic is without a coach, and a former ATP player urged him to hire John McEnroe as his next coach.

The duo of McEnroe and Djokovic would certainly strike fear into many umpires and add a bit of drama to the tennis world. Whether the Serbian would really go for somebody like the legendary American and whether he would even accept to coach remains to be seen, but former player John Lloyd would like to see it.

Speaking on the Inside-In podcast for the Tennis Channel, Chris Evert’s former husband urged Djokovic to hire McEnroe after his split with coach Goran Ivanisevic. Lloyd further added that he doesn’t think Djokovic would do it, but he does have to hire a coach even though he’s not looking to do so immediately.

“I would almost go sort of left-field, I would go with someone like John McEnroe. I know he probably wouldn’t do it. I think he’s gotta go somewhere. He doesn’t need someone who’s going to be doing drills and stuff.”

Lloyd has an interesting perspective on the matter. He doesn’t think Djokovic needs a motivator in a sense to push him, but he does think that the 24-time major winner would benefit from somebody who can bring in something new and re-energize the team after so many years with Ivanisevic.

“It’s the mind, it’s almost like the re-energizing, the motivation, the days before, the nights before the big matches. The day of the big matches, motivating. I know he’s self-motivated, don’t get me wrong.”

“I don’t know, just someone that’s out there who’s going to give a kind of fresh, like, ‘You know, I’m X years older and all that, but I don’t think it’s that, it’s not.'”
