Coco Gauff, the reigning champion of Roland Garros, continued her impressive campaign at this year’s tournament with an assertive victory over Mayar Sherif, securing a straight-sets win of 6-3, 6-2. This performance marked Gauff’s sixth consecutive trip to the third round at the French Open.
Displaying remarkable adaptability and court coverage, the fourth seed effectively managed Sherif’s powerful topspin forehand and sudden bursts of energy. Gauff demonstrated her skill by winning eight of the last ten games in the match, showcasing her ability to perform under pressure.
With this victory, Gauff extended her winning streak at the French Open to nine matches, bringing her one step closer to the fourth round. She is set to face either the 28th seed Anastasia Potapova or British player Katie Boulter next.
Gauff’s performance was characterized by depth in her shots and dynamic movement across the court. She successfully converted seven out of thirteen break points and unleashed 23 winners compared to Sherif’s five, underscoring her dominance on the court. This triumph also marked Gauff’s 80th career win in major tournaments, a noteworthy achievement that places her alongside Maria Sharapova, who was the last woman to reach that milestone before turning 23.
On a day of American success at Roland Garros, several U.S. players advanced with straight-sets victories. Notable performances included US Open finalist Amanda Anisimova and 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys, as well as Iva Jovic and Peyton Stearns, all progressing to the third round. However, the 30th seed Ann Li faced disappointment, losing to French player Diane Parry in a match that ended 6-3, 6-4.
Anisimova’s match concluded early, as her opponent Julia Grabher retired when trailing 0-6 due to heat-related issues, setting up a matchup for Anisimova against Parry for a place in the round of 16.
Further showcasing the talent among American women, Iva Jovic produced a stellar performance in her match against Emma Navarro, winning decisively 6-0, 6-3. The 18-year-old Jovic is excited for her upcoming challenge against four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.
Gauff’s impressive form was evident from the start of her match, racing to a 3-0 lead, although Sherif briefly fought back to level at 2-3. A 14-minute exchange in the sixth game saw a brief interruption for a spectator’s health issue, but Gauff maintained her composure. After initially relinquishing a break, Gauff regained control and closed the first set in 64 minutes.
The second set began with a series of exchanges, including four consecutive service breaks. However, Gauff quickly regained her rhythm and powered through, eventually sealing the match on her signature two-handed backhand.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Gauff as she strives to defend her title and continue her impressive ascent in tennis history.
