Kobbie Mainoo Praises Michael Carrick After Manchester United Victory
After securing a dramatic 3-2 win against Liverpool, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo offered high praise for the impact of his current manager, Michael Carrick, while seemingly hinting at his previous boss, Ruben Amorim.
In an interview with Sky Sports following his crucial 77th-minute goal at Old Trafford, the 21-year-old midfielder expressed admiration for the relationship between the squad and their head coach.
Mainoo, a standout player since Carrick took over in January 2026, noted the positive changes at the training facility, Carrington. He said, “He’s played a huge part in it, all the confidence he gives all the players.” He continued, emotional after the victory, “You want to follow him and fight for him and die for him on the pitch.”
Many perceive these remarks as a comment on the troubled dynamics between the squad and Amorim, whose 14-month management abruptly ended on January 5. During his tenure, Amorim struggled to achieve consistency, leaving the team in sixth place. In contrast, Carrick has rejuvenated the squad, propelling them to third in the Premier League.
Ruben Amorim’s Challenges with Kobbie Mainoo
The difference in Mainoo’s involvement under the two managers is notable. Despite being considered one of United’s most promising young players, he received minimal playing time under Amorim, totaling just 212 minutes in Premier League matches during the first half of the season. At one point, Mainoo even contemplated a transfer to Napoli in January to seek more game time.
However, since Carrick’s appointment on January 13, Mainoo has emerged as a key figure in United’s lineup, starting 12 of the first 13 games under Carrick’s leadership. The new manager has tailored his playing style around Mainoo’s strengths, including his composure, intelligence, and passing ability, which had previously been underutilized.
Mainoo’s pivotal performance against Liverpool serves as a testament to Carrick’s belief in him and underscores what Manchester United risked losing under their former coach. Additionally, with Mainoo committing to a new long-term deal, United has secured one of their most vital players for the foreseeable future.
