Liverpool appears to be renewing its pursuit of Spanish forward Nico Williams, whom they had previously targeted.
Recent reports from Spain suggest that the 23-year-old winger has become a prime candidate for Liverpool as they prepare to fill the void left by departing Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.
Salah’s decision to leave has prompted Liverpool to seek a high-quality replacement, and it seems they are currently in the lead to secure Williams’ services.
Potential Impact of Nico Williams at Liverpool
Williams could prove to be a valuable addition to Liverpool’s squad. Despite experiencing a less than stellar season with Athletic Club Bilbao, he is regarded as a talented player in Europe, having demonstrated his skills for both his club and the national team. This year, Williams has netted six goals and provided seven assists.
If Liverpool can assist him in regaining his form and confidence, they may find themselves with a standout player. Currently, Williams is contracted with Athletic Club until 2035, featuring a hefty €95 million release clause.
However, Liverpool is unlikely to meet that release clause and is expected to negotiate a more affordable transfer fee. They are aiming to leverage his current form and the uncertainty surrounding his future at the Spanish club to finalize the deal.
Will Liverpool Secure Williams Without Paying Excessively?
Williams reportedly earns €10 million annually at his existing club. Given his inconsistent performances this season, it wouldn’t be surprising if Athletic Club permitted his exit for a fee around €80 million. Nonetheless, that figure still seems steep for a player of his current status, which may compel the Spanish club to adopt a more lenient approach.
Williams possesses the technical capabilities that could translate well into English football, and his direct playing style makes him a suitable candidate for the Premier League. A change of scenery may be just what he needs to rejuvenate his career.
Arsenal has also shown interest in Williams.
