Manchester United Pursues New Midfield Talent
Manchester United is seriously considering bolstering its midfield by pursuing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, despite also making significant strides towards signing Ederson from Atalanta. Reports from Italy indicate that the Manchester club views the two transfers as not mutually exclusive.
Gianluca Di Marzio suggests that United’s interest in Tonali remains strong, even with ongoing discussions regarding Ederson. The club acknowledges the urgent need for multiple new midfielders this summer, particularly as Casemiro is set to depart at the season’s end.
Potential Changes for Tonali at Newcastle
There’s an intriguing development concerning Tonali’s future at Newcastle. In March, it was reported that he had a “gentleman’s agreement” allowing him to leave if the team did not secure European qualification and a prominent club approached him. This insight has resurfaced in recent discussions, making Tonali’s situation particularly noteworthy.
Reports from Italy indicate that United believes they can achieve a remarkable dual acquisition of both Tonali and Ederson. The financial expectations for Ederson are estimated between £43 million and £50 million, while Tonali’s price tag could potentially be much higher.
This reflects United’s strategy, as manager Michael Carrick appears intent on enacting significant changes in the midfield rather than settling for a single replacement for Casemiro. The player’s exit creates a considerable void in experience and defensive capabilities, and the team’s midfield has long needed more dynamism and control.
Tonali is expected to offer a distinct skill set, excelling not only as a defensive anchor but also in playmaking. At his peak, he contributes with intensity, aggression, and the ability to dictate the match’s tempo, aligning him with other elite midfield targets, including Bruno Guimaraes.
Negotiation Challenges Ahead
However, the major obstacle remains the financial aspect. Newcastle is likely to demand a hefty fee; some reports suggest a figure between €75 million and €100 million, while others speculate that the actual asking price could be even steeper. Fabrizio Romano has also pointed out that United regards the transaction as costly, considering salary expectations as well.
Nevertheless, Newcastle’s failure to qualify for European competition might alter the circumstances surrounding Tonali. If he indeed holds a mutual understanding with the club regarding his future, and if he desires to play in the Champions League, United might find an opportunity to challenge Newcastle’s position.
