A surefire way to lose sanity is to dwell on what could have been.

In sports, there are so many twists and turns that it would be all-consuming to imagine how this or that would change if one simple thing transpired – or did not.

Now, imagine the NFL without superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City almost certainly would not have three Super Bowl titles under Andy Reid and be the back-to-back world champions, and someone else would be the face of the league.

That nearly happened.

Randi Mahomes told The Mom Game Podcast that her world-famous son nearly quit football when he was much younger.

His mom recounted Patrick coming to her during the summer before his junior year of high school and admitting that he might not want to play football any longer.

Mahomes said she urged her son to stick it out and warned him that he would be bored if he gave up high school football.

She explained that, due to living in Texas, the family would still attend games and he would not feel right sitting in the stands.

Interestingly, Patrick’s mother recalled that he would pick up a football as soon as practice started and put it right back down when the season ended.

This was due to playing basketball and then baseball after the gridiron year concluded.

It is difficult to imagine the NFL landscape without Mahomes flinging the pigskin around on Sundays, but that was nearly the reality.

Every Kansas City fan should say a word of thanks to Patrick’s mother for her role in securing three Lombardi Trophies.
