As the 2026 edition of the Rome Masters unfolds, two prominent Russian players, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, are set to showcase their skills in the second round this Saturday. Medvedev will take on Tomas Machac, while Rublev will be matched against Miomir Kecmanovic.
Daniil Medvedev, currently ranked ninth in the world, has displayed an unpredictable performance pattern recently. He had a fantastic run at the 2023 Internazionali BNL d’Italia, but his form took a dive in Monte-Carlo where he suffered a shocking double bagel at the hands of Matteo Berrettini. More recently, Medvedev advanced to the fourth round in Madrid, only to be eliminated by Flavio Cobolli following a tightly contested three-set match.
Tomas Machac, ranked 41st, also presents an unpredictable challenge. Known for his fluctuating performances, Machac kicked off his season with a title in Adelaide but has since compiled a disappointing 6-8 record over his last 14 encounters. He did manage to secure a notable victory against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, winning in straight sets, but the matchup against Medvedev poses a different challenge altogether. Medvedev’s consistent baseline game may force Machac to exert himself far more than he did against Tsitsipas, leading to Medvedev likely improving his head-to-head record against the Czech player to 3-0.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2 sets.
In the other showdown, Andrey Rublev, seeded 12th, faces Miomir Kecmanovic for the third time in their careers. Both prior encounters have heavily favored Rublev, with the Russian emerging victorious in straight sets on both occasions — 6-3, 6-1 in Doha 2020 and 6-1, 6-2 at the 2023 Miami Masters.
However, Rublev’s form this year has not been at its peak. Currently sitting at 14th in the rankings, he possesses a record of 15 wins and 9 losses in 2026 and has struggled to claim victories against players ranked in the top 30. Kecmanovic, ranked 70th, is having an underwhelming season himself, holding an 8-12 record and recently breaking a five-match losing streak with a win over Dalibor Svrcina. Despite his current form, Kecmanovic’s previous results against Rublev suggest that the Russian should have the upper hand this time as well.
Prediction: Rublev in 3 sets.
Both matches promise to deliver exciting tennis as the players vie for advancement in one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments. Fans will be eager to see how these matchups unfold and if Medvedev and Rublev can secure their spots in the next round.
