The fourth round of the Rome Masters promises to be a thrilling day, highlighted by a clash between Andrey Rublev and Nikoloz Basilashvili. Additionally, rising star Martin Landaluce, who snuck into the tournament as a lucky loser, faces Hamad Medjedovic in another exciting matchup.
In the first match of the day, 12th seed Andrey Rublev takes on Georgian powerhouse Nikoloz Basilashvili. This matchup is notable as it represents the eighth chapter of their competitive rivalry, which has seen Rublev lead the series 4-3. The last time they squared off on clay was in 2019 at the Hamburg Open, a contest that Basilashvili won 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Despite not being at his absolute best lately, Rublev, ranked 14th in the world, has shown his resilience by moving through the tournament with back-to-back straight-set victories over Miomir Kecmanovic and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Basilashvili’s progression in the tournament, however, is far more unexpected. Once a top player, the 34-year-old Georgian had seen his ranking plummet outside the top 1000 in recent years. He has defied the odds in this tournament, qualifying for the main draw and dispatching Daniel Merida, Ben Shelton, and Brandon Nakashima. Both players are known for their aggressive play, yet Basilashvili often struggles against opponents able to strike the ball with equal force from the baseline. Given the current form and historical context, Rublev is the favorite to win this encounter in straight sets.
In the second match, Hamad Medjedovic will take on Landaluce, who has had a remarkable journey in this tournament. Initially facing elimination after a loss to Andrea Pellegrino in qualifying, Landaluce’s fortunes changed when he received a lucky loser spot due to Valentin Vacherot’s withdrawal. The young Spaniard has since seized his chance, defeating Marin Cilic and Mattia Bellucci without dropping a set.
This will be the second meeting between Landaluce and Medjedovic, with the Serbian winning their previous clash 6-4, 6-2 during the 2024 Istanbul Challenger. Medjedovic, 22, is making strides in his career and is set to improve his ranking beyond his personal best of No. 57 after an impressive run in Rome. His recent victories, especially a nail-biting win against Joao Fonseca in a tiebreak, suggest he possesses a competitive edge.
With both matches expected to be fiercely contested, tennis fans are in for a treat as these players showcase their skills and determination on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
