With the Nitto ATP Finals and Davis Cup in the rearview mirror, it’s not too early to start looking ahead toward the 2024 tennis season. Sure enough, the first initial entry list for 2024 was announced on Tuesday in Brisbane, Australia.
Headlining the Brisbane International, which is an ATP 250 tournament, are Holger Rune, Grigor Dimitrov, Ben Shelton, and Andy Murray.
Rune finished the 2023 campaign ranked No. 8 in the world and made his debut at the year-end championship. The Dane won a title in Munich and was runner-up at a pair of Masters 1000 events in Monte-Carlo and Rome. Dimitrov came on strong late and will head into next season at 14th in the rankings. Shelton’s breakout 2023 included a quarterfinal run at the Australian Open and a semifinal showing at the U.S. Open. The American has soared to 17th in the world. Murray, 36, is No. 42 in the rankings following a roller-coaster season.
“I’m thrilled to be playing the Brisbane International for the first time in 2024,” Shelton said. “My first trip to Australia was last January, and it was such an amazing experience. The fans were so welcoming. I’m looking forward to exploring Brisbane and playing in front of the local fans. Hopefully, there will also be a chance to fit in some sightseeing during my visit.”
Meanwhile, the women’s field features Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Victoria Azarenka, and Naomi Osaka.
“To have both the world No. 2 and world No. 4, Sabalenka and Rybakina, headlining the women’s field and young gun Ben Shelton also confirmed further cements the tournament as a premium event,” tournament director Cam Pearson commented.
The Brisbane International is set for December 1-January 7.
