Sinner Advocates for Improved Match Scheduling at the Madrid Open

As the Madrid Open progresses, Jannik Sinner, the current world No. 1, has expressed concerns regarding the scheduling of matches, particularly during the night sessions. Speaking after his impressive victory over Cameron Norrie, where he secured a straight-sets win of 6-2, 7-5, Sinner highlighted the challenges posed by late-night matches that can extend beyond 1 a.m. local time. This win marked Sinner’s 20th consecutive victory, propelling him into the quarterfinals of this prestigious ATP-WTA event.

Sinner articulated his frustrations, indicating that while he can adapt to any match time, the late finishes disrupt players’ daily routines and take a toll on their physical and mental well-being. “Even if you have a day off, the fans only see us on court, and when we finish at 1:15 a.m., there’s still the press conference, recovery protocols, and meals to manage. You’re often not in bed until 4 or 5 a.m.,” he explained, suggesting that adjustments could be made to improve the tournament experience for both players and fans.

The Italian’s potential quarterfinal opponent, young Spanish talent Rafael Jódar, recently experienced the late-night scheduling first-hand after his marathon match against Rafael Fonseca. Sinner noted the impracticality of scheduling two night matches back-to-back, emphasizing that it’s unrealistic to anticipate that each match will conclude within the hour and a half boundaries set by organizers.

“I found it unreasonable for Jódar to go on court around 11 p.m. and finish as late as 1:15,” Sinner remarked, stressing that players need adequate rest for optimal performance. He underscored the importance of common sense in scheduling, advocating for a more balanced approach that allows for proper recovery time between matches.

Looking ahead, Sinner’s next match is set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Caja Mágica, where he aims to continue his dominant form in the tournament. As he prepares for this critical clash, the conversation surrounding match scheduling remains a salient topic among players, with Sinner leading the charge for a more player-friendly framework during the event.
