Madrid witnessed a remarkable debut performance at the Madrid Open, where 19-year-old Rafael Jodar captivated the crowd with his spirited on-court celebrations and impressive skills. After overcoming Jesper de Jong in a tense first-round battle, Jodar’s enthusiasm was palpable as he celebrated his win by mimicking a goal celebration from Jude Bellingham, the star midfielder for Real Madrid.
Jodar, a native of Madrid and a devoted supporter of the local soccer club, showcased his appreciation for Bellingham by inscribing “Hey Jude” on a camera lens, a gesture that resonated with the audience. Bellingham, who was present to witness the match, acknowledged the young tennis star with a smile and applause. The two athletes even seized a moment together post-match, uniting for a photo in a celebration pose reminiscent of Bellingham’s own.
“Meeting him after the match was incredible. I didn’t expect him to be here, and it means a lot to me. He is a great person and my favorite player,” Jodar expressed, reflecting on the interaction.
Bellingham had been in town following Real Madrid’s recent soccer victory over Alaves and was expected to represent England in the coming World Cup. Jodar has a special connection with the player, having met him previously while being honored at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium after clinching the U.S. Open Boys’ title in 2024.
In a match that unfolded over two and a half hours, Jodar displayed remarkable resilience to turn the tide against de Jong, ultimately pulling off a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory on the iconic Caja Mágica’s center court. This triumph marked a significant milestone in Jodar’s career, making him just the third Spanish player in history, following legends Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, to secure a main-draw win in Madrid before reaching the age of 20.
“Competing here was something I looked forward to. I knew I had to bring my best game, and I’m thrilled to have achieved this victory,” Jodar commented, reflecting on the accomplishment.
A year ago, Jodar found himself outside the top 600 in the world rankings, but a recent victory in Marrakech marked his first ATP Tour title, propelling him into the top 100 by March. Currently, Jodar stands at an impressive No. 42 in the ATP rankings.
Looking ahead, Jodar is set to face fifth-seeded Alex de Minaur of Australia in the next round of the tournament, eagerly anticipating the challenge that lies ahead.
