Liverpool Targets New Winger Following Salah’s Exit
Liverpool is reportedly prioritizing the acquisition of a new right winger this summer, with RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande emerging as the top candidate to succeed Mohamed Salah.
As stated by The Telegraph, the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international ranks highly on Liverpool’s list of potential signings. Other names under consideration include Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon and Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.
Diomande is believed to have a release clause of approximately £86 million, making this transfer a significant investment for the club.
This summer could prove crucial for Liverpool as Salah’s departure leaves a noticeable void, not only in terms of goals but also concerning his leadership, influence, and reliability on the field.
Focus on Strengthening the Attack
Arne Slot has acknowledged the need for Liverpool to enhance their attacking options following a disappointing performance during the 2025-26 season, where the team’s wingers struggled to maintain the output seen in previous successful campaigns.
This is where Diomande appears to be a fitting target—he is young, dynamic, and is already considered one of the most promising attacking talents in Europe.
According to sources in Germany, Leipzig values Diomande at around €100 million (equivalent to £86-£87 million), and they have no immediate need to sell since they have secured a spot in the Champions League.
However, there are inherent risks involved. At just 19 years old, Diomande presents potential but replacing Salah, one of football’s standout players, poses a formidable challenge.
Liverpool is not only in search of a capable winger but is also looking for someone who can eventually shoulder significant offensive responsibilities within the Premier League.
Consideration of Alternative Wingers
This is where Gordon and Barcola come into play as viable alternatives to Diomande.
Gordon brings valuable Premier League experience, along with speed, tenacity, and a strong work ethic, but securing him from Newcastle would likely come at a hefty price.
On the other hand, Barcola possesses the technical skills and finesse that Liverpool typically seeks, yet signing him from PSG could prove challenging.
While Diomande presents the most exciting possibility, he also carries the most risk at that price. Gordon might be a safer option due to his familiarity with the league, whereas Barcola could provide the highest level of technical prowess.
Liverpool recognizes the necessity of acquiring more than one winger; they require multiple signings to adequately fill the significant role that Salah played at the club.
