Arsenal is reportedly interested in acquiring West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes to take over from Christian Norgaard.
Manager Mikel Arteta values players who have proven themselves in the Premier League and possess versatility, qualities that Fernandes embodies well.
Throughout this season, the promising young Portuguese international has performed admirably in both defensive and attacking midfield roles, leading The Times to suggest that he is being monitored by Arsenal.
As West Ham faces a potential relegation to the Championship—ironically after Fernandes missed a crucial opportunity against Arsenal last week—the 21-year-old may become available for transfer this summer.
Arsenal’s Pursuit of Fernandes
The Times has also mentioned Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain as potential contenders for Fernandes, but he could be a strong fit for Arsenal’s needs.
Having adjusted well to English football, the player may prefer to remain in the Premier League, known for its intense competitive nature compared to other European leagues.
Clearly, Arsenal is in need of a player with Fernandes’ skill set; Arteta has demonstrated a lack of faith in Norgaard, who has seen limited playtime this season since joining from Brentford.
Fernandes could immediately contribute to Arsenal, especially given that Martin Zubimendi has had little respite and there is a lack of viable alternatives for Declan Rice.
In the evaluation based on the Transfer Fit rating system, Fernandes’ potential move to Arsenal has received a score of 17 out of 25.
Despite limited experience, Fernandes has shown the quality needed to enhance Arsenal’s midfield depth and is likely to come at a lower cost if West Ham is relegated.
