Australian Open Day 7: Sinner Rescued by the Roof

Jannik Sinner, the current world No. 2, demonstrated resilience and adaptation during a challenging encounter in the Australian Open’s third round against Eliot Spizzirri. Competing in scorching heat, Sinner found himself battling not just his opponent but also the adverse conditions of a relentlessly hot day. When the match was tied at one set apiece and Spizzirri had taken a 3-1 lead in the third, the Italian faced severe cramps that hindered his performance.

Fortunately for Sinner, the tournament’s heat rule came into play as the heat index surpassed 105 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting officials to close the roof over Rod Laver Arena. This break provided a crucial 10-minute respite that allowed Sinner to recover and recalibrate. Emerging from the brief intermission, he showcased a renewed vigor, breaking back immediately and ultimately securing the match with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

“The conditions were tough today. I did start to cramp a bit during the third, but thankfully, after some time, it began to subside,” Sinner reflected post-match. He acknowledged the importance of experience in managing his physical responses during a match, stating, “I got lucky today when the roof closed; it allowed me to loosen up. I also adjusted my strategy on how to approach certain points, which was beneficial.”

Sinner aims to claim his fifth Grand Slam title in Melbourne, following his most recent triumph at Wimbledon. His victory at the All England Club was marked by a dramatic comeback, as he advanced when opponent Grigor Dimitrov retired mid-match due to injury while leading two sets to love.
