Iva Jovic, the 18-year-old American sensation and the youngest player in the WTA rankings’ Top 100, showcased her remarkable talent at the Halle International WTA 250 event, achieving a spot in her second career final. On Friday, Jovic executed a thrilling comeback against Australian wild card Taylah Preston, ultimately winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a contest that lasted over two hours. With this victory, Jovic will now face off against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who reached the final by defeating Antonia Ruzic in straight sets.
This encounter was a rollercoaster of emotions, with each player trading momentum in a highly competitive match. Jovic reflected on her performance, stating, “It was a crazy match. Taylah was having an unbelievable week, playing some of the best tennis I’ve seen. I really had to adjust, find a different strategy, and just try not to panic.”
The match began with a challenging first set for Jovic, in which she struggled on serve, facing multiple breaks. Despite this, Preston capitalized on her opportunities and closed out the set. However, Jovic regrouped in the second set, making tactical adjustments that allowed her to capture a key break at 4-3. From that point, she maintained her composure and pushed through to force a decisive third set.
“I thought if I could put a little scoreboard pressure on her, I’d have something to work with in the second set,” Jovic explained. Her ability to remain calm and capitalize on the changing dynamics of the match was crucial to her success.
The third set marked a significant shift in Jovic’s favor, as she broke Preston three times, demonstrating her resilience and determination. The American managed to turn the tide and finish the match with dominant play.
“I went to sleep around 2:30am and got up at 9,” Jovic admitted, recalling her less-than-ideal preparation for the semi-final. “I felt sluggish this morning, but I worked with what I had, and just focused on staying in the match.”
Jovic has made a strong start to her season, with a 7-1 record following her semi-final run in Auckland and her impressive performances in Hobart. “Starting off well is nice, but I’m really focused on continuing to improve and reaching bigger goals,” she added.
Elisabetta Cocciaretto, 24, advanced to the final for the second time in her career after defeating Ruzic 6-3, 6-2 in a commanding 78-minute match. This final will mark the first encounter between Jovic and Cocciaretto, making it an intriguing showdown.
With the stakes high, Jovic aims to secure her second WTA title following her maiden triumph in Guadalajara last September, while Cocciaretto seeks to claim her first title since her victory in Lausanne in 2023. As these two rising stars prepare to face each other, the anticipation builds for what promises to be an electrifying final at the Hobart International.
