Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca are set to face off for the first time in their careers during the quarterfinals of the BMW Open in Munich. Both players secured their spots in this round with impressive performances in the second round on Wednesday.
Shelton, currently ranked sixth in the world, dispatched young talent Alexander Blockx with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6(8). The American had to dig deep in the second set, saving two set points before ultimately clinching the match in one hour and 46 minutes. This tournament holds special significance for Shelton as he is defending the runner-up points he earned here last year when he fell to Alexander Zverev in the final.
Fonseca, a rising star at just 19 years old, had a commanding victory over Arthur Rinderknech, tallying a straightforward 6-3, 6-2 win. The Brazilian’s recent rematch against Rinderknech harkened back to their previous encounter at Monte-Carlo last week, where Fonseca faced a more challenging three-set battle. This time, however, he managed to maintain control, holding serve even after facing break points in both sets.
“It was crucial for me today to stay composed during those moments,” Fonseca remarked. “I focused intensely because I knew Rinderknech could bring his A-game, especially in these conditions. He’s a formidable opponent with a lot of game.”
In other action on Wednesday, Fabian Marozsan advanced as well, triumphing in a closely contested match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. After being delayed due to darkness, Marozsan rallied to claim victory with scores of 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, demonstrating resilience against the former top-ranked player.
As the tournament progresses, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on the showdown between Shelton and Fonseca, both eager to continue their successful runs in Munich.
