Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has expressed his disappointment regarding the club’s failure to sign Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo when the opportunity arose.

Gerrard’s remarks come at a challenging juncture for Liverpool supporters, as the team battles to secure a place in the Champions League while watching former targets succeed at other clubs.
Gerrard on Potential Signings
The Liverpool icon was straightforward in his assessment of Guehi and Semenyo, both of whom had been linked to the Reds prior to their respective transfers to Manchester City.
Liverpool nearly finalized a deal for Guehi last summer, only for Crystal Palace to retract just before the agreement was set to be completed.
Semenyo was also closely associated with a move to Liverpool, but City outmaneuvered them by activating his release clause and offering a more lucrative contract.
Gerrard’s critique of the club’s recruitment strategy highlights the frustrations experienced during the January transfer window, where Liverpool did not take the opportunity to strengthen their squad, in contrast to Manchester City’s proactive approach.
“They should be wearing Liverpool colors,” Gerrard declared. “We were interested in both players, and their presence would have significantly improved our chances. It’s painful to witness them thriving at City when they were almost ours.”
“They possess the Premier League resilience and quality that could have resolved our challenges this winter.”
Guehi and Semenyo’s Impact at Manchester City
The disappointment over these missed opportunities is magnified by the substantial contributions both players have made at Manchester City.
Since their arrival in January for a combined fee around £82.5 million, Guehi and Semenyo have played pivotal roles in City’s impressive performance during the latter part of the season.
Guehi has brought essential defensive reliability amidst City’s injury challenges, while Semenyo has introduced a dynamic and explosive element to Pep Guardiola’s offensive setup, already making key contributions to the scoreline.
Their signings coincided with City’s opening up of the title race, recently triumphing over league leaders Arsenal and making the championship trophy increasingly attainable.
