Sebastian Kehl is frontrunner for Tottenham’s director position
According to Sky Sports, Sebastian Kehl is the leading candidate to assume the newly available director role at Tottenham Hotspur.
The club, based in North London, is aiming to revamp its football operations following a challenging phase that has dropped them into a precarious relegation fight.
Spurs management is reportedly eager to bring the 46-year-old German on board this summer to lead a substantial squad overhaul alongside current technical director Johan Lange.
Under this proposed arrangement, Lange would shift back to focusing solely on his role as technical director, while Kehl would handle the responsibilities of sporting director and collaborate closely with the first team.
Critical time for Tottenham as they seek stability
This move comes at a crucial moment for the club. With just five matches left in the season, Spurs are currently sitting in 18th place, two points away from escaping the relegation zone with a total of 31 points.
Despite the looming uncertainty about their Premier League future, the board is advancing with long-term strategies to address the void left by the recent departure of Fabio Paratici.
As reported by Sky Sports, Kehl has emerged as the ‘top target’ for this position, with Tottenham looking to partner him with Johan Lange for the team’s reconstruction.
While head coach Roberto De Zerbi works to keep the club in the Premier League, the potential appointment of Kehl is viewed as a vital step in establishing a more stable recruitment strategy, which has faced criticism this season.
Kehl’s impressive background at Borussia Dortmund
Kehl comes with a strong reputation from his stint at Borussia Dortmund, where he successfully transitioned from being a club captain to sporting director in 2022.
During his time at Signal Iduna Park, Kehl was credited with keeping Dortmund as one of Europe’s leading talent hubs while challenging Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title in the 2022-23 season.
His impressive track record in the transfer market is particularly appealing to Spurs. He played a crucial role in bringing in high-profile players and managing significant departures. Noteworthy signings during his tenure at Dortmund include Nico Schlotterbeck, Niklas Süle, and Karim Adeyemi.
Kehl’s recent departure from Dortmund was by mutual agreement, and his capability to construct competitive teams on reasonable budgets aligns with Tottenham’s needs as they prepare for a potential relegation and significant player exits, including potential departures of stars such as Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
