Gauff’s Former Coach Reveals Reason Behind Mysterious Split Despite US Open Win

The former coach of Coco Gauff Pere Riba did some good things with the player, however, they suddenly split and the reason might be known right now.

Coco Gauff spent much of the spring this year searching for a coach. She didn’t rush the decision but wanted to find someone who could work well for her. The choice ended up being former player Pere Riba, who had been working as a coach for a few years.

Despite being relatively young, Riba did some good work with Gauff. Things exploded after Brad Gilbert joined the team, as Gauff had the best month of her career. Several trophies, including her maiden US Open trophy, and Gauff was firmly considered one of the best players in the world.

Things looked great, but then came the news of their split. It was rather shocking because everything seemed fine, but Riba was out. Gauff confirmed later that the Spanish coach initiated the split for ‘personal reasons’, which only created more questions.

Fast forward to now, and Riba is working again. The new season is fast approaching, and the Spanish coach is back to coaching Chinese sensation Qinwen Zheng. She had a breakout year and is certainly a player to watch, capable of becoming the sport’s next superstar.

They used to work together in the past, so it’s not new for either party. Zheng herself had some coaching drama earlier this year when her coach Wim Fisette suddenly left her team to work with the returning Naomi Osaka again.

It’s been a telenovela year when it comes to coaching in tennis, well, except for Raducanu, who has yet to hire a new coach. In any case, Riba is back with Zheng, which makes you wonder whether he left Gauff to work with Zheng. If so, that would be quite interesting.
