The New York Giants surprised some people on Thursday when they took wide receiver Malik Nabers with the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft.

There had been a growing buzz that they would go with a quarterback, perhaps J.J. McCarthy, as they reportedly had a desire to move away from Daniel Jones, who has been their starter under center since he entered the league in 2019.

But one could make an argument that taking Nabers was the right thing to do.

He said he had talked to Jones and that Jones said he was happy that Nabers is now a member of the Giants, per Talkin’ Giants.

Nabers is one of a trio of excellent wide receiver prospects in this year’s draft class, along with Marvin Harrison Jr., who went at No. 4 to the Arizona Cardinals, and Rome Odunze, who is headed to the suddenly loaded Chicago Bears via the No. 9 selection.

He registered 1,569 receiving yards, which led the FBS, while scoring 14 touchdowns last season for LSU.

He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, and he will help New York address arguably their biggest weakness.

They have badly needed a legitimate threat at wide receiver, and with star running back Saquon Barkley heading down I-95 to the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, they badly needed a legitimate offensive threat, period.

Jones hasn’t proven he is a legitimate winning quarterback, but at least now he won’t have any excuses, assuming Nabers becomes as good as he’s capable of becoming at the next level.
