Manchester United is intensifying its pursuit of West Ham United’s standout midfielder, Mateus Fernandes.
The future of the Portuguese international has become a topic of significant discussion as West Ham faces the possibility of relegation to the Championship. Should they fail to escape the drop, retaining the 21-year-old is likely to be unfeasible.
Fernandes has been described as a ‘fantastic’ talent, which has further fueled interest from top clubs.
Fernandes Likely to Depart West Ham This Summer
According to reports, Manchester United is increasingly interested in acquiring Fernandes, and the club is ramping up its efforts to land the young star at Old Trafford this upcoming summer.
Discussing the situation on the Transfer Insider Podcast, Pete O’Rourke noted, “Manchester United and several other teams will be looking to capitalize on West Ham’s potential relegation with Mateus Fernandes. He remains one of their key midfield targets.”
O’Rourke added, “If West Ham goes down, retaining the services of the Portuguese midfielder will be extraordinarily challenging since I’m sure he won’t want to compete in the Championship. There will be many clubs keeping a close watch on both Fernandes and West Ham’s efforts to avoid relegation.”
“It will be quite a battle for West Ham to hang on to him, especially if they descend.”
Despite West Ham’s struggles throughout the current season, Fernandes has emerged as a bright spot with his consistent performances during his debut campaign.
Manchester United Eyes Midfielder
Fernandes has played in 35 matches, contributing to seven goals. While he primarily operates as a central midfielder, he has also showcased versatility by taking on various roles in the midfield. His impressive display has caught the attention of Manchester United.
With Casemiro departing and Manuel Ugarte likely to be sold, the Red Devils are keen on reshaping their midfield, with Fernandes at the top of their wishlist. They may seek to benefit from West Ham’s precarious situation.
Although West Ham would prefer not to lose the talented midfielder, retaining him will be nearly impossible should they find themselves in the Championship next season. Fernandes is eager to play at the highest level, with interest from several elite clubs.
