Monte Carlo Masters 2024 Day 2 Recap

[ad_1]

The sun has set on day two of the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters, and it was a good day for the seeds. Dimitrov (11), Tstisipas (12), Humbert (14), and Khachanov (15) all progressed into the round of 32 at the Principality.

It was also a day of firsts, as Sumit Nagal became the first Indian player to win a Masters 1000 match on clay, and Arthur Fils (19 years old) became the youngest Frenchman to win a match in Monte Carlo since Richard Gasquet upset Roger Federer in 2005 when he was just 18.

You can see the full results from day two below and select highlights.

Dimitrov Vanquishes Vacherot

dimitrov monte carlo

Grigor Dimitrov arrived in Monte Carlo after a Miami Open final run, and while he didn’t quite hit the level we saw in the Sunshine State, he was still too strong for Monagasque wildcard Valentin Vacherot, coming through 7-5, 6-2 in 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The opening set was a tight affair, and only a few mistakes at 5-6 allowed Dimitrov to snatch the set. From there, it was plain sailing, and he’ll face either Berrettini or Kecmanovic in the second round.

It was a difficult match. I am glad I kept on going. I know I was far away from my game, but I have other things I can do in moments like that, and that helped me step up a little bit, and that was enough. Dimitrov on his win over Vacherot.

Nagal Negates Nardi

nagal

Sumit Nagal is in a history-making mood. After becoming the first Indian in 42 years to make the main draw in Monte Carlo, he went one better by being the first Indian to win a Masters 1000 match on clay with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4  win over Matteo Arnaldi.

That’s a very impressive win for Nagal as Arnaldi is a high-quality player with a clay pedigree, so to see him off in 2 hours and 38 minutes takes some doing. A match with Holger Rune awaits the qualifier.

Khachanov Too Strong for Norrie

khachanov

Cameron Norrie joined Dan Evans as a first-round loser in Monte Carlo and went out with a 5-7 6-7(3) loss to Karen Khachanov.

The fifteenth-seeded Russian had to battle hard against the equally hardworking Brit, and he came back from 5-6 15-40 in the second set, winning 11 of the last 14 points to progress into the second round.

Other Matches of Note

Monte Carlo Country Club
  • Aliassime Nails Nardi: This was a dominant win for the Canadian, which I didn’t expect. He brushed aside Luca Nardi 6-2 6-3 to set up a meeting with Carlos Alcaraz. Aliassime didn’t face a single break point in his 82-minute win and may well fancy his chances against the Spaniard, who reportedly is struggling with forearm pain, which has curtailed some of his practice sessions.
  • Ofner Offloads Evans: As I expected, Sebastian Ofner proved too strong on clay for the out-for-form Dan Evans, who couldn’t find the level that saw him take out Djokovic in Mickey Carlo a couple of years ago. 6-1 6-4 in 1 hour and 9 minutes.
  • Tsitispas Eases Past Djere: Tsitsipas led 6-3, 3-2 when the Serbian stopped due to right arm pain. Monte Carlo is the Greek’s best tournament by a long way, so it will be interesting to see if he can turnaround his recent poor form.
